About My Reviews
I try not to do reviews in a traditional way. Many book blogs I’ve come across reveal entirely too much. I love plot surprises and hate them to be spoiled. I believe it is possible to pique someone’s interest without ruining the entire story. Around here, major plot spoilers are off-limits, but I will delve more deeply into individual elements of the story and how they relate to my life and the present day. I’ve found much of how I feel about a book is based on where I am and what circumstances surround my life at the time.
I won’t re-iterate anything you can find on a generalized summary unless absolutely necessary. I believe in quality over quantity. I hope to inspire you to read a book and draw your own conclusions. If I ever confuse you or you want to know more about a book, just ask!
This site started after I won a few pre-sale books through GoodReads.com and was encouraged to review them. I was interested in a few elements beyond just a basic review, so my idea for this blog was born.
I will happily accept books from publishers or authors for review, so long as you want an honest opinion.
If you are interested in doing a guest review, having me post a review book review for you, providing a recommendation, or something else entirely, email me at stackofspines@gmail.com.
About Me
Helicopters and Gingerbread was the first book I learned to read on my own when I was home sick one day. My childhood summers were spent alternating between swimming and plowing through The Sweet Valley Twins series. Throughout High School my knowledge grew and my love for literary discussion blossomed.
After graduating from college in 2006 (where I didn’t have time to read except what was assigned) and realizing I was missing out, my 2008 New Years Resolution was to read more. I didn’t define “more” but figured I’d be successful so long as I read more than I was reading at that point, which was practically nothing. I renewed long expired library card, and the revolving stack of spines on my nightstand remains.
And in case you’re curious, I came up with the name after a little gentle teasing from my family that I always have a huge stack of books at home just waiting to be read.
Though I read more fiction than non, I am willing to try just about anything. Most of my selections at this point are based on a whim.
FAQ
Do you review everything you read?
I review most things. If I can finish it, it’ll have an in-depth review. Books that are lovingly tossed into my defenestrate stack after a few frustrating chapters will have a review, but it may be short and lacking insight. If I stop a book before the end, I’ll always explain why.
Are you a library junkie?
Does a one-legged duck swim in a circle? YES! I can’t afford to live at the bookstore or build my own library at this point, so I live at the library. I’m there at least once a week.
How much do you read per day?
I always have a book with me, so I can’t tell you the exact total. Usually at least 1/2 hour to an hour a night are devoted during the week and a few more on the weekends. It depends what I am reading as well! If I can’t put one down, well, that means the laundry can wait. :)
