After an initial cool start to the summer, the dog days are officially here. The humidity is around 90% and the temperatures feel suffocating. Our air conditioning was out for almost two weeks but luckily it has been fixed and my house is hospitable to human life once more. I’ve woken up to rain more than once this week, which only serves to make me not want to wake up.
This weekend I am looking forward to curling up in bed and under the clouds to enjoy some down time that has been elusive lately. Boy, do I have a pile I’m dying to get through.
I’m hosting my local book club this month, so at the very least I need to finish Corelli’s Mandolin. Wouldn’t that be awful if I showed up trying to lead a discussion without knowing the ending? After nearly 160 pages, I finally met Antonio Corelli. The Italian invasion has sure thrown the characters (and as an afterthought, me) for a loop. The writing is densely packed but also incredibly revealing; this is not a book to be read quickly, but rather, enjoyed, which I plan to do to the best of my bibliophile capabilities. Housework will just have to wait.
The Little Giant of Aberdeen County is also on my short list and so far has promised to be a unique and fun-loving glimpse into my childhood. Er, on second thought, perhaps I should not be too eager to start this one? It seems I’m following up WWII horrors with grade school ones. I’ll make sure I have plenty of hot tea on my nightstand along with that stack. I can’t ignore the excellent reviews so far, though.
And finally, Moonlight in Odessa has proven itself to be quite enjoyable so far, providing quite the commentary on marriage and relationships. The main character Daria is best described as a spitfire, and I will always make time for one of those.
I can’t wait to post my reviews for these three. They are all so different, and besides, isn’t that what makes reading fun? If there ever was a weekend to hole up inside, this one has my name written all over it.

Yikes I’ve never gone into a book club discussion without knowing the ending. Hope you can finish the book in time!
I read (and enjoyed) Little Giant. Looking forward to your review!
