The library I frequent is not the most glamorous of places. It doesn’t have cool architectural elements or a deck with views of the lake. But, it serves its purpose and encourages reading for those who need a resource. It is in a neighborhood that certainly needs a library, and there is often a security guard at the circulation desk. I smile whenever I see him.
It is on the way home for me, so in the last year I have been spoiled by their abundant evening hours. Due to our Governor’s budget cuts, now I will only be able to stop certain days of the week. They took effect August 1, so I knew it was coming, but it was still a hard pill to swallow when the calendar changed. While I am grateful that I still have a library to go to (there was a rumor my branch may close) I am sad the hours have been so dramatically cut. Hopefully this is just a temporary measure.
What about you? Has the economy impacted your library?

I haven’t noticed if the economy has impacted my particular branch. When I lived on the beach in a traditionally “older” neighborhood the hours were mostly daytime. There were two night hours. I haven’t been to the library in my new county yet but it’s on my to-do list!
