After my initial foray into Blogger Memoirs, I am delighted to find there is a new type of memoir on the block. Alaina Sheer, author of MsSingleMama.com, has written an eBook that is part diary and confessional, part how-to manual. Ms Single Mama says:
“I wrote it…in hopes that someone who had yet to read my blog could follow along seamlessly.”
Old posts are mixed with new stories and her insights and revelations fill the gaps, creating a smooth, easy to follow glimpse into her world.
Coincidentally, the timing is perfect for me because I just came across her site a few short months ago when I saw a piece in our City’s main newspaper about her involvement in the Ford Fiesta Movement.
The eBook reads reads like a girlfriend sitting across from you having cocktails and gushing her hopes, dreams, fears, and heartaches. The evolution of her writing and views on single motherhood are evident as they change from the early blogging days. Some excerpts are included as they fit, and new material expands to fill gaps in the story. Early posts are free-spirited, while later ones are more confident and direct. One in particular, a highlight from November 2007 when the blog was in its infancy and discloses single mom dating tips, stands out as a glimpse of a blogger from days gone by. I can see Sheer exhorting others to believe in themselves, and then the changes in her persona from taking her own advice. It is refreshing to see her confidence catch up with her optimism through various parts of the eBook.
Sheer invites you into her world, and while I am not single nor a mother, the underlying themes of trusting and believing in yourself rang true to my heart. Ms Single Mama finds a way to balance romantic optimism with the realities of daily life, all the while ensuring the needs of her son Benjamin are met. As both Benjamin and her confidence grow, she slowly heals from her previously chaotic life, and explains:
“Love yourself first if you ever want anyone to love you.”
The last few pages are my favorite, because they show just how far this single mama has come. Refreshingly, the adventure is not over yet. I must offer a word of warning, though. Be careful. The inspiration is contagious.
